It may not seem like it, but a backpack is a must-have item for toddlers. While they may not be off to school full-time just yet and they certainly don’t need to carry a bunch of items,  a toddler backpack is great for travel, daycare, camp or simply everyday use. They also give toddlers a sense of independence and ownership that they crave at this age. Encouraging them to pack a few items on their own,  like a toy or a snack, can set them up for a great day (wherever you’re going) and also encourage their development.

Plus, aside from being practical, many toddler backpacks are just downright adorable. From animals to cute prints, your little one will have a blast picking out his very own backpack. But there are a few things parents must consider in addition to cuteness. Toddler backpacks must be safe, since they will be carried on little, developing bodies. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that backpacks have wide, padded straps and a padded back. They also suggest that the backpack itself isn’t too heavy so it  doesn’t add to the weight of what’s being carried. With all that in mind, here are our top picks for toddler backpacks.
